Job Posting – Forest Fire Risk Reduction Analyst

The applicant will contribute to restorative practices in the Maxwell Creek Watershed on Salt Spring Island. The candidate is responsible for assessing forest hazards at the watershed scale using LiDAR and other remote-sensed data, maps and data to identify priority areas for interventions. Field validation through site visits will be undertaken by the candidate.

Online training in the use of GIS and/or LiDAR data and their interpretation will be provided at the level required to advance the candidate’s skills for their use. The use of R Programming may be required. Additional online programming courses will be available to the candidate. The GIS assessment framework developed with the candidate will directly contribute to on-the-ground interventions to protect the watershed by identifying areas of high fire ignition potential. This work will inform the locations of fuel management activities and interventions in the watershed. This work has significant importance in this community as the watershed is known to have an extreme fire hazard level immediately surrounding one of the two main water supplies for the residents. Ecological fuel management will also enhance resilience to fire and reintroduce wildlife habitat that has been missing due to historic logging activities (150 years of extractive logging).
