High style container home

Four repurposed shipping containers provide a compact super-insulated hideaway overlooking the ocean. Heat pump and heat recovery ventilator (HRV).

The site

The site is ecologically sensitive and has a steep drop off to the ocean. The container home minimized site work and ecological damage.

Design

Designed and supplied by Honomobo, the house is a standard HO4 (four container) model, 32ft x 24ft, with great room, two bedrooms, bathroom and mechanical room efficiently organized in 704 sq. ft. The containers are refurbished by Alta-Fab Structures Ltd. in Nisku Alberta.

 Construction

The containers, which are finished in marine-grade enamel, were craned into place and bolted to steel plates welded to a reinforced concrete crawl space foundation. Because shipping containers are made of corten steel and designed to withstand harsh conditions, they meet structural and seismic requirements and are very durable. Joints between the containers were sealed and a continuous membrane was installed on the roof. Decks and a porch at the front door were added.

Thermal envelope

Polyurethane spray foam is used to insulate the containers: R-25 walls and R-40 ceilings. Floors are insulated with fiberglass batts. Windows are aluminum-clad vinyl frame with double pane Low-E insulated glass. Because the containers are virtually airtight, there is very little air leakage. The crawl space foundation walls are insulated on the interior with extruded polystyrene foam.

Mechanical systems

A Fujitsu mini-split air source heat pump provides space heating and cooling. A small HRV by VanEE provides mechanical ventilation. A standard hot water tank supplies hot water.

Interior finishes

The Honomobo design package includes cabinetry and fixtures. The containers were shipped with most of the interior finishes in place. Work completed on site included finish floors, drywall touch up, and installation of doors.

Rainwater harvesting

Future plans include a water storage tank to collect water from the roof.
