The Dead Boats Disposal Society (DBDS) with the support of a private donor is hosting a community shoreline clean-up on Friday May 28, 2021. Fulford Harbour was the scene of a massive operation in 2017 when many large boats and a barge were successfully removed. Thankfully, the mess left behind (EPS aka styrofoam, broken wood, personal effects), plus newly abandoned boats, will be hauled away by the crew of the DBDS on May 28th. Volunteers are needed to scour the shoreline, and stack the pieces in one area to speed the removal process. It will be a very low tide -0.7 m (-0.2 ft).
Please meet at the entrance to the Fulford ferry parking lot at 10:30 am. Park your car either at the corner of Fulford-Ganges and Beaver Pt. Rd. or along Morningside/Orchard Rd. Bring gloves, good shoes/boots and an extra first aid kit if you have one. Garbage bags will be provided but extras always appreciated. John Roe, head of DBDS has a tip – Use plastic milk jugs with the top trimmed off to scoop smaller bits. And to quote John “There will be some grunt work so we need a few youngens with a strong back.”
ALSO, Drummond Park will be cleaned on the same day! There will be a large bin placed at the park. Volunteers can park nearby and walk in any direction to find debris and place it in the bin.
Even though this is an outdoor event, please maintain physical distancing for those not in your bubble. Contact Anne Parkinson, Transition Salt Spring Marine Environmental Protection Group, annepar2 at gmail.com
