Job Posting – Forest Health Assessor
The successful candidate will contribute to restorative practices in the Maxwell Creek
Watershed on Salt Spring Island, including implementation, data collection and monitoring.
Trees will be monitored and evaluated for disease and condition. Wildlife and danger trees will
be assessed in the field, and maps will be produced. Technological skills will be
required/acquired, including Geographic Position Systems, wildlife danger tree assessment, and
database management and development.
The candidate will learn and contribute to the development of actual restoration projects in the
watershed. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to acquire certification in Wildlife
Danger Tree Assessment from the Province of BC and may also undertake Tree Scaling Training
which will help prepare them for forestry and natural resource management positions.
Qualifications
Applicants must be aged 15-30, post-secondary graduates from a STEM field and hold Canadian
citizenship, Canadian permanent residency status, or Canadian refugee status.
Any related experience is considered an asset but not necessary.
Terms
The successful applicant will work in the field on Salt Spring Island and, if necessary, remotely.
Applicants who live on Salt Spring Island will be given priority. Applicants from visible minority
groups are especially encouraged to apply and self-identify on the application.
The position will start in early September 2023 and end in February 2024.
Wage rate is $30/hour for approx. 37 hours of work per week for a total of $27,750 over this six-month period.
