Job Posting – Hydrological Mapping Lead

The successful applicant will contribute to restorative practices in the Maxwell Creek Watershed on Salt Spring Island. This applicant is responsible for assessing watershed hazards, using LiDAR and other remote-sensed data, maps and data to identify priority areas for wetland interventions and riparian restoration. The candidate will conduct a hazard assessment to identify sources of nutrients and sediments entering wetlands and the lake that supplies potable water to the island. Based on this analysis, the candidate will contribute to the development of a wetland restoration plan by working with a team of established restoration professionals. This project seeks to fill existing knowledge gaps in techniques to assess watershed health and vulnerabilities by compiling a baseline dataset, recording the current conditions of a representative watershed for the Gulf Islands.

The candidate will be paid to undertake training in Geospatial Information Systems appropriate to their level of GIS experience.

Qualifications

Applicants must be aged 15-30, post-secondary graduates from a STEM field and hold Canadian citizenship, Canadian permanent residency status, or Canadian refugee status.

Any related experience is considered an asset but not necessary.

Terms

The successful applicant will work remotely, with occasional travel to Salt Spring Island. Applicants from visible minority groups are especially encouraged to apply and self-identify on the application. 

The position will start in early September 2023 and end in February 2024.

Wage rate is $30/hour for approx. 30 hours of work per week for a total of $22,500 over this six-month period.
