Solar Scholarships Awarded!

We’re pleased to announce that two young GISS graduates have been awarded the 2018 scholarships by Salt Spring Community Energy under its Solar Scholarship Project. The two recipients were presented with their scholarships by Member of Parliament Elizabeth May at the graduation ceremony on June 16th, 2018.

Thomas Boland received a scholarship of $600 for studies at Thompson Rivers university where he will pursue dual degrees in Business Administration and Computer Science with the goal developing a business offering sustainable housing, transportation, power and food solutions.

Bonnie Reynolds will apply her $1000 scholarship towards the pursuit of a degree from Brock University in Political Science with an emphasis on Environmental Studies. Her goal is to eventually go into environmental law.

It is enormously satisfying to be able to use funds generated from sunlight to help young people accomplish their goals of making the world a better place.

Keen observers of the scholarship will notice the smaller scholarship amounts this year. In April 2017 BC Hydro removed the “Conservation Rate” from the Large General Service Account that applies to the high school. This rate incentivized energy conservation projects making the solar generation worth just over $0.10/kWh. In 2017 array generated 26,162 kWh’s but the value since April is now just $0.057/kWh.
