On January 24 and 25 2012, Simon Fraser University Carbon Talks hosted an invitational dialogue on the energy future of Salt Spring Island. Dialogue participants included twenty-one thought leaders from the community. The objectives for the day and a half dialogue included: discussing key energy trends and issues affecting Salt Spring Island, identifying the challenges and opportunities of the BC Hydro smart meter program, and developing options for securing Salt Spring Island’s energy future. This dialogue was part of SFU Carbon Talks’ ongoing low-carbon research program.
The session was designed to create a safe space for exploration, dialogue and generative thinking. The session did not attempt to represent Salt Spring Island residents in any official manner. Participants were selected by SFU to reflect a diversity of interests present on the island and individuals were asked to “take their hats off” and speak on their own behalf, rather than the interests of any organization or constituency.
